Barry has been Assistant Headteacher at Scalby School in Scarborough, a mixed 11-16 comprehensive for the last 6 years; he leads Deep Learning, is responsible for teaching and learning, data and assessment, CPD, NQT induction and student voice and has held this role for the past four years and for the two years previous to that was AHT for Deep Leadership leading specialism, data and assessment and whole school development planning.
Barry holds a Masters in Education from the Open University and in 2011 gained NPQH. He has a passion for teaching and learning and how teachers assess and target students and is constantly looking for inspiration and ideas to develop teaching and drive up achievement. This has been forged in the crucible of ‘special measures’ when working at both Scalby School and Bridlington School when they were subject to special measures. This has made him resilient, adaptable and innovative in his approach and Barry understands what it is like to have to work in a pressurised environment where substantive improvement and impact are needed. This is the key to quality self-evaluation – honesty and an ability to prioritise improvements to move forward and robust ways of evaluating impact.
