David has been Head of Mathematics at Scalby School in Scarborough for seven years. During this time at Scalby results in mathematics have risen from 49% A*-C to a peak of 84% A*-C.
David became a SLE in the main to both share his expertise in leading successful mathematics faculties, to work with primary schools in improving attainment in mathematics and to gain fresh ideas from other schools; he passionately believes that every mathematics team works to do their best for their students and the expertise to bring about outstanding results is within every school it just sometimes needs a fresh pair of eyes to identify the structures and systems that will make it all gel to achieve the improvements asked of us all.
A highlight of David’s recent work with local primary schools was team teaching with a year 6 teacher helping her to become more confident in working with level 5/6 students, in particular on how to set up a thinking skills approach to the teaching of using and applying mathematics that enthuses young people to develop their enquiring minds and increase their attainment as a consequence. Working with primary colleagues to develop strategies and offering CPD opportunities to improve mathematics attainment is a particular area of David’s work for the last two years.
