Geography Teacher Subject Specialism Training 2019–20

The Outwood Institute of Education is delighted to offer Geography subject knowledge training for non-specialist secondary teachers of Geography.  The programme is appropriate for non-specialist teachers and also useful for subject specialists who need a refresher or to develop aspects of their teaching.

There are 21 modules available. Participants select which modules are relevant at the launch session following advice and guidance from the course facilitator. Participants are expected to attend a minimum of 11 modules. Modules available:

  • 16th September 2019 – Launch

  • 25th September 2019 - The hook: engaging activities in Geography

  • 10th October 2019 – Use of command words

  • 21st October 2019 – The art of explanation

  • 6th November 2019 - Formation of physical features - sequence and process

  • 21st November 2019 - Key Concepts e.g. multiplier effect, sustainability

  • 2nd December 2019 - Interrelationships in Geography

  • 18th December 2019 - Evaluation in Geography

  • 16th January 2020 - Modelling

  • 27th January 2020 - Those difficult lessons e.g. Global Atmospheric Circulation Model

  • 12th February 2020 - How to use figures in exam questions

  • 27th February 2020 - Statistics and Maths Skills

  • 9th March 2020 - Graphical Skills in Geography

  • 25th March 2020 - Geographical Location in Geography

  • 2nd April 2020 - Describing Patterns on maps and graphs

  • 20th April 2020 - Working with different kinds of maps e.g. choropleth/topological/aerials

  • 6th May 2020 - OS Mapwork in Geography

  • 21st May 2020 - An introduction to Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

  • 1st June 2020 - Fieldwork in Geography

  • 17th June 2020 - Great revision strategies in Geography

  • 2nd July 2020 - The use of games in Geography

All sessions will take place from 4:00pm – 5:45pm at Outwood Institute of Education, Outwood Academy Acklam, 68 Hall Drive, Middlesbrough, TS5 7JY.

  • OIE Alliance Members: £95 per participant

  • All Other Participants: £150 per participant
